Getting a Thai Driving License – An Easy Step by Step arrival

มิถุนายน 18th, 2011

Obtaining a Thai driving license is relatively simple, but you must hold a non-immigrant visa in order to be eligible. If you intend to drive a car or motorcycle within Thailand during a holiday, then it is not needful to get a Thai driving license at all. A valid International Driving Permit, along with your home country driving license, is acceptable, but you must have both.

Rayong

If you will be in Thailand for a stay long enough that you hold a non-immigrant visa, then if you intend to drive in Thailand it is advisable to get a Thai driving license.

When you first get the license it will be valid for one year. Upon renewal, the license is valid for five years. Thailand does not combine licenses for car and motorcycle. Each is a detach license. If you intend to drive both, then you will need both licenses.

The easiest way to get the license is to come to Thailand with both your valid home country driving license and an International Driving Permit. Make sure the International Driving Permit specifies car, motorcycle, or both if you intend to use it to get the Thai driving license. Despite the fact that an International Driving License is valid for one year, Thailand honors it only for the first ninety days upon entry to the country, so make sure you get your licenses within those ninety days. Also, you must get the International Driving Permit covering of Thailand.

You must also yield two additional documents. You must yield a medical certificate and a residence certificate. You can get the medical certificate at any hospital or street clinic. The medical certificate is quite simple. Practically literally, if you are inspiring and breathing you can get the medical certificate. It is easiest and least costly to get one at a street clinic.

For the residence certificate you must hold a valid non-immigrant visa, have passport photos, and yield documentation that verifies your address in Thailand. You must also have a copy of your main passport page and your visa page. You get the residence certificate at an Immigration office, but it must be the office in your home province. Most immigration offices have a photo and copy shop next door. You can get anything photos or copies you need at the copy shop. The fee for the certificate at most immigration offices is 200 baht. When the certificate is issued, make sure to check that it shows that you hold a non-immigrant visa. Sometimes they mistakenly show that you hold a tourist visa. Check that to be sure.

According to the most recent regulations, if you are getting both a car and motorcycle license, a copy of your medical is accepted for the second license, but you must have a detach residence certificate for each license. If you intend to get both licenses, get two residence certificates.

Here’s what you need to take with you when you go to get the driving license:

o Valid Passport with non-immigrant visa

o residence Certificate

o medical Certificate

o Valid home country driving license

o Valid International Driving Permit

Once you have the required documentation you are ready to go to the driving license agency. In Pattaya the branch is settled at the Eastern Verification Center. To get to the Eastern Verification center you go north on Sukhumvit Highway, as if you are headed to Bangkok. When you reach the junction of Highway 3 and Route 36, 8 kilometers from Central Road (Pattaya Klang), take Route 36, toward Rayong. You’ll see a sign that says “Rayong,” with a right-pointing arrow. That’s the road you take. 5 kilometers up the road you’ll come to a sign that points Bangkok to the left and Rayong to the right. Go to the right. Practically immediately see a large, rather new seeing school, The Regent’s Academy. Directly in front of the school make a U-turn. Once you pass the school again, take the first left you come to, and just effect the road around. You’ll see a large white building on the right side of the road. That’s where you are trying to go.

At the building entrance there will be a desk at which you fill out the application form for the driving license. Make sure to tell the clerk which driving licenses you want. The clerk will check your documentation and post you if you need anything else. If you do need additional copies, directly across the street from the building there is a row of copy and photo shops. Once the clerk is satisfied you will then be issued a whole and sent upstairs to wait your turn to be called.

When you are called your documents will be taken and you will then be sent to go through some uncomplicated physical tests. Those ordinarily consist of a color blindness test, a peripheral foresight test, and a reaction time test. There can be other types of tests if they so choose.

Once you pass those tests, you’re done. All you will have to do is wait to be called to pay the fee, about 200 baht, and wait again for the license.

What happens if you don’t have an International Driving Permit and/or a valid home country driving license? You’ll have to sit through a two-hour movie, all in Thai, followed by a written test. Then, hours later, you will have to physically drive a car through their obstacle course while the investigator watches. You have to contribute the car and/or motorcycle yourself. If you’re going to get both the car and motorcycle license, again those are two detach licenses. You can do it all in one day, but since you can’t drive both a car and a motorcycle to the agency, how can you do it? If you don’t have a motorcycle or car, offer a Thai who is getting his own license about 200 baht if he’ll let you drive the obstacle course on his motorcycle. You will Practically always find someone willing to help you out.

If, for some reason, you fail any of the tests you can try again in thirty days.

When the time comes to renew your license you must yield the same documentation again. Of course, since you already hold the Thai driving license, you no longer need a home country driving license or International Driving Permit. There are no fee penalties if you renew late.

One benefit to holding a Thai driving license is you can quite often get the Thai price, rather than the farang price, at venues and parks, or at least a discount. Also, when you find yourself in circumstances in which you are asked to leave Id, you can leave the license rather than your passport.

Thailand Do’s and Don’ts – Staying Out of problem in Thailand

มิถุนายน 15th, 2011

Every country and region has their own cultural differences that make trips to foreign lands that much more exciting. Absolutely while finding out about and enjoying the differences in other cultures can be one of the great experiences of traveling, there are some things about Thailand that you may like to know before you go, to avoid any unnecessary cultural goofs, or in the worst case, jail-time.

Respect the Royal Family.

Cha-am

This had got to be one of the most important rules in Thailand. The king in Thailand is very respected and loved by all of the Thai people and any disrespect toward the king or any member of the royal house will not only deeply offend the Thais, it can also land you in jail. Lese Majeste is a crime that is still on the books in Thailand, and people still get prosecuted for it. Also many people do not know that the Lese Majeste laws in Thailand Absolutely apply to all royal families around the world; so theoretically, you could get arrested for expressing disrespectful opinions about Queen Elizabeth Ii or Belgium’s King Albert Ii. Thais can even find seemingly innocuous questions like “why is the king so revered in Thailand?” as offensive, so it is probably best not to talk about the royal house at all in Thailand.

Thailand Do’s and Don’ts – Staying Out of problem in Thailand

Disrespecting the King is not confined to words. If you go to the movies in Thailand, the Royal anthem is played before every movie and all patrons must stand up while it. If you don’t stand and quietly observe this show of respect, you will find yourself the target of the ire of other patrons and may even be reported to the police. Also, images of the king must also be respected. As the king’s image appears on all Thai currency, be sure to treat this with respect. For example, if you drop a coin and it rolls away, do not stamp on it with your foot to stop it rolling any further, this is thought about disrespectful as is folding paper money in a way as to make the king’s face smile or frown, which I personally found out the hard way is not funny in Thailand.

Physicality

In Thailand the head is thought about the top part of the body, both figuratively and literally. You should never touch the head of other people, even children. If you do touch someone’s head, even slightly, you should apologize. Conversely, the foot is the lowest part of the body and thought about dirty. You should never use your foot to point out objects, or even worse, people, as this is thought about very rude. Also take care never to step over other people, for example if they have their legs outstretched on the floor. It is better manners to walk around people than to step over them.

Public displays of affection are frowned upon in Thailand and most people will be embarrassed to observe people kissing or hugging in public.

Also, while the gorgeous beaches may make you want to soak up as much sun as possible, topless sunbathing is looked down upon in Thailand and is not appropriate.

Buddhism

Nearly 95% of Thais are Buddhists and temples are an integral part of the quintessential Thailand sightseeing itinerary.

When planning on visiting a Buddhist temple, you should dress appropriately, meaning no open-toed shoes. Legs and shoulders should be covered, so no shorts or tank tops. Shoes are allowed on the grounds of the temple, but not inside where the Buddha image is kept. Also keep in mind the point made above about pointing with your feet. If you are sitting inside a temple, take care so that the soles of your feet never point towards the model or image of Buddha.

Buddhist monks cannot come into corporal perceive with women or sit next to them on communal transport. A woman cannot hand anything directly to a Buddhist monk. If a woman wishes to give something to a monk, the accurate policy is to hand it to a man who will hand it to the monk. However if the woman feels that she must give the item to the monk directly, he can spread out a piece of saffron robe or handkerchief, and she can place the item on top of this.

Respect

Thai culture places a lot of point on respect for the aged. While dealing with older people, it is best to be as respectful as possible. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you are haggling with a merchant or speaking with a tuk tuk driver. Your respectful tone will not only save you “face”, an important view in Thailand, but it may even be rewarded in the price you ultimately agree upon.

A quick way to lose “face” and the respect of Thai people is to lose your temper in public, or worse yet, shout at man in public. Thais a re very uncomfortable with communal displays of anger and consider it very uncouth. Getting angry at man in Thailand is very unlikely to help you get your way, and in fact merely hardens the other party’s stance and any sympathy you may have had from surrounding people is likely to evaporate quickly. Best to keep your cool and a smile on your face.

Disciplining your children or arguing with your spouse in communal are also included in this type of no-nos.

Scams

Be faithful of overly amiable strangers who arrival you in the street and offer to show you around town. A tasteless scam is for a well dressed man to arrival you as you are heading towards a temple and tell you that unfortunately the temple is done that day and offer to show you to someone else one, or to show you a good gem store. Don’t go with these people! The gem store ruse is also tasteless among tuk tuk drivers. They often say that they can show you some good gem stores, and that they can receive coupons for gasoline for bringing you to the store. They will then say that they will not receive their coupons if you do not buy anything and try to guilt you into buying something. Any gem store that participates in such activity is very unlikely to sell you genuine stones. Unsuspecting tourists are often told that they can resell the gems at a partner store in their home country for high profits, only to observe that the stones are approximately worthless once they get back home. Don’t be fooled by the lovely smiles on the gorgeous young ladies in the stores!

Taxis

When hailing a taxi, hold your arm up with your palm facing downwards and make a beckoning petition with your fingers, kind of like a “shoo” go away” petition in reverse.

Also by law all taxis must turn on the meter when they carry a fare. Some drivers may sometimes try to strike a deal with you off the meter before you leave. This will never be in your favor, and as stated above is against the law. If the driver hasn’t started the meter when you depart, amiable remind him by saying “metaa na kap” if you are a man and “metaa na kaa” if you are a woman.

Finally

Do try to learn some of the local language, even if it is just uncomplicated greetings and numbers. Your holiday will be that much more enjoyable when the locals see you putting in an endeavor to speak their language. You will receive a much warmer reception by the already famously amiable Thais that you will be very happy that you put in the endeavor to learn.
