Getting a Thai Driving License – An Easy Step by Step arrival

วันเสาร์, มิถุนายน 18th, 2011

Obtaining a Thai driving license is relatively simple, but you must hold a non-immigrant visa in order to be eligible. If you intend to drive a car or motorcycle within Thailand during a holiday, then it is not needful to get a Thai driving license at all. A valid International Driving Permit, along with your home country driving license, is acceptable, but you must have both.

If you will be in Thailand for a stay long enough that you hold a non-immigrant visa, then if you intend to drive in Thailand it is advisable to get a Thai driving license.

When you first get the license it will be valid for one year. Upon renewal, the license is valid for five years. Thailand does not combine licenses for car and motorcycle. Each is a detach license. If you intend to drive both, then you will need both licenses.

The easiest way to get the license is to come to Thailand with both your valid home country driving license and an International Driving Permit. Make sure the International Driving Permit specifies car, motorcycle, or both if you intend to use it to get the Thai driving license. Despite the fact that an International Driving License is valid for one year, Thailand honors it only for the first ninety days upon entry to the country, so make sure you get your licenses within those ninety days. Also, you must get the International Driving Permit covering of Thailand.

You must also yield two additional documents. You must yield a medical certificate and a residence certificate. You can get the medical certificate at any hospital or street clinic. The medical certificate is quite simple. Practically literally, if you are inspiring and breathing you can get the medical certificate. It is easiest and least costly to get one at a street clinic.

For the residence certificate you must hold a valid non-immigrant visa, have passport photos, and yield documentation that verifies your address in Thailand. You must also have a copy of your main passport page and your visa page. You get the residence certificate at an Immigration office, but it must be the office in your home province. Most immigration offices have a photo and copy shop next door. You can get anything photos or copies you need at the copy shop. The fee for the certificate at most immigration offices is 200 baht. When the certificate is issued, make sure to check that it shows that you hold a non-immigrant visa. Sometimes they mistakenly show that you hold a tourist visa. Check that to be sure.

According to the most recent regulations, if you are getting both a car and motorcycle license, a copy of your medical is accepted for the second license, but you must have a detach residence certificate for each license. If you intend to get both licenses, get two residence certificates.

Here’s what you need to take with you when you go to get the driving license:

o Valid Passport with non-immigrant visa

o residence Certificate

o medical Certificate

o Valid home country driving license

o Valid International Driving Permit

Once you have the required documentation you are ready to go to the driving license agency. In Pattaya the branch is settled at the Eastern Verification Center. To get to the Eastern Verification center you go north on Sukhumvit Highway, as if you are headed to Bangkok. When you reach the junction of Highway 3 and Route 36, 8 kilometers from Central Road (Pattaya Klang), take Route 36, toward Rayong. You’ll see a sign that says “Rayong,” with a right-pointing arrow. That’s the road you take. 5 kilometers up the road you’ll come to a sign that points Bangkok to the left and Rayong to the right. Go to the right. Practically immediately see a large, rather new seeing school, The Regent’s Academy. Directly in front of the school make a U-turn. Once you pass the school again, take the first left you come to, and just effect the road around. You’ll see a large white building on the right side of the road. That’s where you are trying to go.

At the building entrance there will be a desk at which you fill out the application form for the driving license. Make sure to tell the clerk which driving licenses you want. The clerk will check your documentation and post you if you need anything else. If you do need additional copies, directly across the street from the building there is a row of copy and photo shops. Once the clerk is satisfied you will then be issued a whole and sent upstairs to wait your turn to be called.

When you are called your documents will be taken and you will then be sent to go through some uncomplicated physical tests. Those ordinarily consist of a color blindness test, a peripheral foresight test, and a reaction time test. There can be other types of tests if they so choose.

Once you pass those tests, you’re done. All you will have to do is wait to be called to pay the fee, about 200 baht, and wait again for the license.

What happens if you don’t have an International Driving Permit and/or a valid home country driving license? You’ll have to sit through a two-hour movie, all in Thai, followed by a written test. Then, hours later, you will have to physically drive a car through their obstacle course while the investigator watches. You have to contribute the car and/or motorcycle yourself. If you’re going to get both the car and motorcycle license, again those are two detach licenses. You can do it all in one day, but since you can’t drive both a car and a motorcycle to the agency, how can you do it? If you don’t have a motorcycle or car, offer a Thai who is getting his own license about 200 baht if he’ll let you drive the obstacle course on his motorcycle. You will Practically always find someone willing to help you out.

If, for some reason, you fail any of the tests you can try again in thirty days.

When the time comes to renew your license you must yield the same documentation again. Of course, since you already hold the Thai driving license, you no longer need a home country driving license or International Driving Permit. There are no fee penalties if you renew late.

One benefit to holding a Thai driving license is you can quite often get the Thai price, rather than the farang price, at venues and parks, or at least a discount. Also, when you find yourself in circumstances in which you are asked to leave Id, you can leave the license rather than your passport.

Getting to Know Phuket’s Beaches

วันพุธ, ธันวาคม 8th, 2010

I spent a little more than a year living in Phuket and came to know the Phuket beaches well. Before I moved to Phuket I wasn’t a big fan of beaches, but after looking what the island had to offer, I ultimately warmed to them.

For anyone visiting the island, the Phuket beaches are one of the former draws. However, Phuket‘s most beloved beaches are by all means; of course the ones I would try and avoid. The beach that seems to attract more citizen every year no matter how much good guidance is written about the place is Patong Beach.

Phuket Resort

It defies belief that citizen still flock to Patong Beach and continue to leave with the same complaints. The food is overpriced, there are too many people, the beach is dirty and so on. There’s a presuppose why the citizen who live in Phuket only easily investment to Patong Beach for the nightlife or else occasionally for shopping. It’s a bit of a dive. There are much great Phuket beaches colse to the island.

Getting to Know Phuket’s Beaches

My personal beloved Phuket beach will always be Mai Khao Beach. I first visited Mai Khao Beach about three years ago. It was the first time I had been in Phuket, but it didn’t take long to decide which beaches to avoid.

Mai Khao Beach is an gargantuan stretch of untouched paradise. There are countless spots where there is nothing else except the sand, sea and you. If you want gorgeous natural surroundings and the kind of beach you see in brochures, all you need to do is go to Mai Khao.

However, most tourists forsake Mai Khao, either because it’s too far or too difficult to get to. Mai Khao Beach is placed in the north of Phuket and can be reached a number of ways. The most obvious, if traveling from Phuket Town, is to take a songthaew as much of the way as potential and then hail bicycle taxis. Otherwise you could rent your own motorbike for 200 baht or so and make the trip north.

The journey might take up to an hour from Phuket Town, but it’s easily worth the effort.

Another beach that receives little attentiveness is Yanui Beach, a tiny little stretch of sand placed just colse to the projection from Nai Harn Beach. As Phuket beaches go, Yanui is great during the high season when there are citizen holding it clean. during low season it has a kind of romantic charm and is a great place to watch the sunset, but there’s regularly an accumulation of garbage along the beach.

There are heaps of other beaches dotted colse to the coast of Phuket. They all have something to offer. Patong Beach is by all means; of course one to avoid, however.

After traveling to the majority of Thailand’s beach destinations, I think that if you do Phuket right, you’ll have a great time than at places such as Samui or Pha-ngan. Thailand has long been on the traveler trail and so no beach destination is perfect, but Phuket can get pretty close.

Getting to Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

วันอังคาร, ธันวาคม 7th, 2010

If you want to go to Koh Phi Phi in Thailand then I hope you have your sea legs because there is no airport on the island and the only way you are going to get there is by boat. You can take the slower and cheaper route and take the communal ferry or if you are in a hurry you can lease a speedboat. You will cut your voyage time in half, but it will cost you more than double.

Phi Phi

As I said, the cheaper way to voyage to Koh Phi Phi is via the communal ferry. Either you are leaving from Phuket or Krabi, there are ferries that make the crossing to Phi Phi on a daily basis. The ferry from Krabi leaves from the pier in Krabi town 3 times a day (10:30, 14:30 and 16:00) and the trip takes about 90 minutes. The cost is just 250 baht which is less than .

Ferries from Phuket also take about 90 minutes, but will cost you almost double or 450 baht. They leave from Rasada pier daily at 8:30 and 13:30. In Either case, the ferry will drop you at Tonsai Bay in Koh Phi Phi and if your hotel or resort is located elsewhere on the island you will need to dispose for transport from there to your hotel. This isn’t too difficult as there are many longtail boats at Tonsai willing to take you to most any point on the island.

If cost isn’t a factor and you just want to get to Phi Phi as swiftly as potential then your best bet is to lease a speedboat. This is admittedly the quickest way to get to the island as well as the most convenient. Speedboats can make the crossing and have you back on land on Phi Phi in as microscopic as 45 minutes. Even better, many speedboats can drop you on the beach by your hotel so you can shave even more voyage time off your trip.

You can expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 baht per someone for this luxury. Costs can be somewhat higher than that while the high season and depending on your potential to barter with the speedboat captain. You can also cut the cost per someone quite a bit if you have a larger party. There are speedboats that can accommodate up to 20 passengers and if you can fill one of these your cost might be close to the same as taking the ferry.

If you plan on taking a speedboat then plan on leaving by 16:00 as the speedboat captains prefer to get back before night falls. You can get a speedboat from Either Phuket or Krabi.
